Cozumel
The island of Cozumel, which means “island of the swallows,” is located just 12 miles from the Yucatan Peninsula and is part of the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel is 28 miles long and 10 miles wide and is world renown for its beautiful beaches and excellent scuba diving. For over 2000 years, the Mayan people have lived on this beautiful island. The main city of San Meguel has a current population of 70,000 people. For centuries, the Mayan women who came to the island to worship the goddess Ixchel, the goddess of fertility, used the island. IN the 15th & 16th Centuries, the Spanish explorers came to Cozumel and by the late 16th Century, most of the native Mayans had died, not from war, but smallpox. In the 18th Century, the Pirates of the Caribbean used Cozumel as a high out and because of the islands many fresh water springs. Cozumel and the San Meguel remained a sleepy fishing village for many years until the 1960’s when Jacques Cousteau, the famed French oceanographer, declared Cozumel’s reef system as one of the most beautiful scuba diving areas in the world. Since that time, Cozumel has continued to grow at a remarkable pace.
